Got back from LA to find my Mac had died. On restarting, it turned out my boot volume (a 250GB striped partition) had died. Tracked it down to a faulty hard drive... but that didn't console the wife, as we had a lot of photos of the kids tucked away in iPhoto... and as we were still in the process of unpacking, I hadn't unpacked the backup drive before I went away. I guess that'll learn me :-(

Just got back from the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference in LA.

LA was an interesting place to be because of the interest in the wildfires... but moreso because our Admin had booked us into a seedy Comfort Inn in the heart of South Central. Not a good place for a country boy to be out at night. Still, it made the conference all that more interesting... especially as most of what Microsoft was promoting was stuff that is 2-3 years away. Yay!

Relaunched the new www.dell.com site. Not just that - we relaunched it in 85 countries over a 13 hour period.

Highlights: Its never been done at Dell.com - launching a global project like that. I got an award presented to me by Michael, and with a personal message... which was pretty cool.

Lowlights: We had a few issues with the image server the day after launch that threw us for a loop... but we figured it out (basically, the library I wrote to do dynamic images was getting a lot more traffic than expected because the caching was messed up).

I guess the other lowlight (which I was pissed about) is I couldn't get the pull down menus working properly in Safari. Seems Safari skimped on some key DHTML features that I use to cancel the menus, so they'd appear in the right place (unlike NS 6.2!) but wouldn't go away.
